19,500 CT Residents Lose Power, Numerous Roads Closed Friday

CONNECTICUT — Strong wind gusts have knocked out power to nearly 20,000 residents as of Friday morning.

Eversource is reporting 19,520 outages including these towns are reporting 500 or more outages: Ashford, Harwington, Mansfield, Thompson, Torrington, Waterford, Winchester, and Woodstock.

These towns are reporting 100 or more outages: Andover, Bolton, Brooklyn, Canterbury, Chaplin, Coventry, Danbury, East Haddam, East Hampton, East Lyme, East Windsor, Eastford, Farmington, Granby, Haddam, Hampton, Herbon, Killingly, Ledyard, Litchfield, Manchester, Middletown, Montville, Newington, North Stonington, Norwalk, Plainfield, Pomfret, Preston, Ridgefield, Salem, Tolland, Willington, Windham, and Windsor.

United Illuminating is reporting 58 outages, with most of those in Fairfield. From the Fairfield Schools Superintendent "Dwight Families Only: Due to high winds causing a power outage and downed wires, Dwight School will be closed today, March 7, 2025."

"A statewide Wind Advisory is in effect throughout the day today for gusts 40-50 mph," said WFSB 3 TV meteorologists. "Temperatures as you are waking up this morning are in the upper 20s and lower 30s (still above average), but they’re feeling more like the teens when factoring in the wind! There are a few isolated snow flurries in a few spots as well, but they won’t amount to anything. You need the winter jacket when heading out to work or school! We end the week dry and bright… but, it will be quite windy! The Wind Advisory runs through the afternoon hours as gusts could reach 40 to 50 mph; a few gusts even higher than that. As temps top out in the low to mid-40s (closer to normal), they’ll feel like 25-35."

Traffic Alert!

Route 85 (Hartford Turnpike) is shut down both ways from Lakes Pond Road into Montville while crews remove a tree hanging on wires that are presumed to be live. Please avoid the area if possible. We will update when the road is open.

Currently South Street at Wrights Mill Road is closed and there are trees being cleared from Ripley Hill Road and the 700 block of Cedar Swamp Road. Please be careful when driving this morning.
