Beloved CT Baseball Coach Dies 'Unexpectedly', Mourned

The sports community is grieving the loss of a popular coach who served young athletes in a range of capacities.

SALISBURY, CT — The Salisbury baseball community is mourning one of its own. Kevin Huber, 50, unexpectedly died in his sleep Dec. 9.

Huber's love of sports began "as soon as he could walk," according to his obituary. He grew up in Blue Point, New York, and went on to play for the University of Bridgeport baseball team where he "forged friendships that would shape his future in the game."

Huber also played professionally with the Zurich Lions of the Swiss Professional Baseball League before beginning his coaching career.

In 2001, Huber founded the Connecticut Blue Jays, one of the state’s original Amateur Athletic Union baseball programs. Over the course of two decades, Huber and Hall operated a "highly successful baseball program that impacted hundreds of young athletes, including several who went on to play in Major League Baseball organizations," according to his obituary.

Huber's coaching career included positions as an assistant baseball coach at the University of New Haven and Fairfield University. He also served on Yale University's staff for 13 years.

Huber taught physical education at St. Theresa School in Trumbull and Our Lady of Fatima School in Wilton "where he inspired young students with his energy, humor, and emphasis on teamwork and personal growth."

He was also a dedicated member of Salisbury School's Athletic Department, serving as assistant athletic director, assistant basketball coach, and head cross country coach.

The school will hold a celebration of life in Huber's honor Jan. 11.
