Coastal Storm Emerges: Here’s What It Means For Snow In CT

Here's the latest on the potential for inclement weather from now through the weekend.

Rain and snow showers are expected in Connecticut starting Wednesday afternoon, according to meteorologists, who are also tracking a coastal storm’s potential impact on the state for Sunday.

The National Weather Service predicts an 80 percent chance of rain in Connecticut after 4 p.m. today, with wind gusts of around 26 to 28 miles per hour.

WFSB reports a clipper system will bring snow and rain showers today, and it predicts the precipitation will arrive from west to east starting around 2 p.m.

“While this will be primarily rain for most, snow is possible (northwest) of I-84, especially in the highest elevations of Litchfield County near the (Massachusetts) border,” WFSB reports. “This is where a slushy coating to an inch of snow could add up (mainly on grassy and elevated surfaces).”

Wednesday’s precipitation will lead to clearing on Thursday, when high temperatures will be in the 30s, according to the National Weather Service.

Latest updates on snow chances Friday, this weekend

The National Weather Service had previously been predicting a 40 to 50 percent chance of snow for Friday night into Saturday. The latest forecast from the National Weather Service calls for dry weather both days, with daytime highs in the 30s, and it is instead predicting potential snow for late Saturday into Sunday.

“Saturday is the pick of the weekend, as it will be dry and relatively milder,” WFSB reports. “Under what we now think will be a mostly cloudy sky, temps peak between 35 and 40.”

The National Weather Service as of Wednesday morning is predicting a 30 percent chance of snow from late Saturday night into Sunday morning.

WFSB reports Sunday will be colder, with temperatures only reaching to the lower 30s.

WFSB is characterizing Sunday as a “timeframe of interest,” and it is currently calling for scattered snow showers. WFSB meteorologists will be monitoring the situation, as the system could either hit Connecticut or move away and miss it, according to the station.

“Our long range models have been all over the place with the development of a coastal storm,” WFSB reports. “Latest indications are that it could come together as energy is moving offshore and away from CT. If this ends up being the case, and we’ll be watching closely, the impact to your weekend plans appears minimal. If it were to develop sooner and/or closer in proximity, impacts could be greater.”
