Connecticut Among The Worst States To Retire, New Study Finds

The state lost major points for affordability, according to the study.

ACROSS CONNECTICUT — If you're thinking about retiring to a new state anytime soon, you may want to count Connecticut out. According to a new Bankrate study, the Nutmeg State ranks among the worst states in the nation to retire in 2021.

Connecticut was No. 41 on the list, which made it the 10th worst.

To construct the rankings, Bankrate looked at a number of public and private datasets related to the life of a retiree. The study examined five categories: affordability was weighted at 40 percent, wellness at 20 percent, culture at 15 percent, weather at 15 percent and crime at 10 percent.

Here’s how those metrics contributed to the state's overall ranking:

  • 49th in affordability
  • 7th in wellness
  • 9th in culture
  • 36th in weather
  • 4th in crime

According to Bankrate’s study, Georgia is the best state to retire, followed by Florida, Tennessee, Missouri and Massachusetts.

The bottom three worst were Maryland, Minnesota and Kansas. These states were majorly dragged down by high or mediocre scores in affordability, culture and weather.
