Connecticut Highway Exits Renumbered: Road-By-Road List

The new highway exit numbers are part of a federal mileage-based numbering standard. Here's what's changing in CT, where and when.

CONNECTICUT — New exit signs along Route 2 in southeastern Connecticut, along with connected portions of Routes 3 and 11, were revealed to motorists for the first time on Tuesday.

The roadway is among three in the state that will find their exits renumbered in 2025.

The changes are part of an ongoing initiative by the state Department of Transportation to conform all Connecticut limited access roads to a federal mileage-based numbering standard.

The renumbering of more than 70 exits along Route 15 began in September, and is scheduled for completion later this year, as is the exit renumbering project along Interstate 291.

The Federal Highway Administration requirement allows drivers to quickly determine distances to destinations and more easily calculate miles traveled, according to the DOT. The new system also improves emergency response and makes it easier to add future exits without renumbering the entire highway.

Exit numbers are determined based on the mileage contained in the DOT Linear Referencing System. Mileage typically runs from south to north and west to east, and is rounded down to the nearest whole mile:

  • No Exit 0
  • Mileage 0.00 – 1.49 = Exit 1
  • Mileage 1.50 – 2.99 = Exit 2
  • Mileage 3.00 – 3.99 and beyond

The plan has been rolling out since 2015, when the state completed the renumbering of the exits along Interstate 395, and has had a minimal impact on traffic during construction. Motorists are typically notified in advance of the start of the work, and electronic changeable message signs to alert drivers of lane closures during construction.

Here's the complete renumbering rundown, past and future, according to the DOT:
