CT Highest Paid State Employees Of 2022

The top slots for highest-paid state employees include several UConn coaches and UConn Health doctors.

CONNECTICUT — The highest paid state employee in 2022 hasn’t technically worked for the state in several years.

Former UConn men’s basketball coach Kevin Ollie was technically the highest-compensated person in 2022, but his case is an exception. Ollie was awarded $11 million during arbitration over his March 2018 firing.

Arbitrator Mark Irvings awarded Ollie about $1.15 million of remaining base compensation, $9.4 million in media fees and $600,000 in deferred compensation, according to CTInsider.

The next three highest compensated state employees include UConn women basketball coach Geno Auriemma, current men’s basketball coach Daniel Hurley and football coach James Mora.

Connecticut’s total payroll was $5.35 billion during 2022, which was about $460 million higher than 2021.

Football and basketball coaches have dominated the highest-paid state employee lists for years across the country.


The top five Connecticut agencies by payroll are:

  1. University of Connecticut: $687.5 million
  2. Department of Correction: $536.54 million (including $103 million in overtime)
  3. UConn Health Center: $534.86 million
  4. Judicial Branch: $360.22 million
  5. Department Of Mental Health and Addiction Services: $330.31 million
