CT Weather: Long-Duration Nor'easter Storm To Produce 50 MPH Wind Gusts, Flooding Concerns

A timeline for a nor'easter storm has been released by meteorologists. Here is what we can expect.

A powerful nor'easter will impact our weather in Connecticut for the next 48 hours. The storm is capable of producing 50 mph wind gusts, which could lead to power outages and heavy rain and flooding is also a concern.

Wind speeds and gusts

WFSB 3 TV meteorologists said "wind speeds and gusts will gradually ramp up through tomorrow."

Interior sections of the state may see 30-40 mph wind gusts, while coastal sections could see wind gusts up to 50 mph.

"Isolated power outages are possible along the shoreline and sporadic inland. (Leaves on the trees + drought stress = increased chance for downed limbs, trees, and power lines)," according to WFSB 3 TV meteorologists.

Flooding threats

"Rain moves in from south to north this afternoon and the intensity increases through tomorrow morning," according to WFSB 3 TV meteorologists.

Most areas will receive 1–2 inches of rain, but some areas may receive three inches of rain.

"Fortunately, the rain comes over a large window of time and is much needed due to drought conditions," according to WFSB 3 TV meteorologists.

A Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued through Monday evening. High tides this afternoon range from 2-4PM, 3-5AM Monday morning, and 3:30-5:30PM Monday afternoon," said WFSB 3 TV meteorologists. (Read more at WFSB 3 TV).

The National Weather Service said the rain should begin to fall in the early afternoon hours in Connecticut.

"A long duration rainfall with an average of 1-3” with the highest amounts near the coast. Areas of minor urban and poor drainage flooding is likely. Storm and Gale conditions on the coastal waters," according to the weather service.


Wind Advisory for coastal southern Connecticut

12 PM Today – 6 PM Monday

"Peak Winds: Northeast winds of 20-30 mph with peak gusts up to 50 mph, particularly for the immediate coast. Strongest winds this evening into early Monday. Impacts: Strong winds will blow down scattered tree limbs. A few trees and power lines could be downed. Power outages are possible," the weather service said.


Coastal flood advisory details

"Widespread minor to locally moderate flooding is expected in the most vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline. Expect around 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground level in low lying, vulnerable areas. Some roads and low lying property including parking lots, parks, lawns and homes/businesses with basements near the waterfront will experience shallow flooding," according to the National Weather Service.

Tonight: Rain. Low around 53. Breezy, with a northeast wind around 25 mph, with gusts as high as 43 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Columbus Day: Rain. High near 62. Breezy, with a northeast wind 23 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 44 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Monday Night: Rain. Low around 52. Breezy, with a northeast wind 17 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Tuesday: Rain likely, mainly before 8am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 66. North wind 15 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
