'Potent' Storm To Hit CT: Here's When, What To Expect

Forecasters said a powerful storm has emerged for Connecticut. Here are new details when it will begin and what impacts are forecast.

CONNECTICUT — Some areas of the state may see some festive snowflakes on Thursday but the bigger weather news is the emergence of a powerful weekend storm.

"Saturday is the pick of the 2-day period as it will be dry, bright, and milder with highs in the low to mid-50s," said WFSB 3 TV Chief Meteorologist Mark Dixon with Scot Haney. "Then, Sunday, as a potent storm system approaches cloud cover increases.

"Overall, the daylight hours will be fine/dry. There is now better model agreement on the timing and potential impacts as the system moves through the region, prompting a First Alert," Dixon and Haney said. "As of now (still subject to change as we’re a few days out), wind and rain ramp up toward/after sunset Sunday. The heaviest rain and strongest wind come at night, with gusts to exceed 40mph. The wind direction, initially out of the south will transport near 60° warmth in at the same time. Something else we’ll be watching: the timing of the strongest wind and the high tide cycle. If in tandem, there will be an increased likelihood for coastal flooding. It all begins to wind down toward daybreak Monday. By the time all is said and done, 1-2″ of rain could fall (with perhaps locally higher amounts)." (Read/watch more at WFSB 3 TV here).
