For Hartford, Tolland, Windham and Litchfield counties, a total of 2 to 3 inches of snow accumulation is now forecast, according to the National Weather Service.

Original story from this morning: This is one of those rare snow storms, albeit a minor one, where communities along the immediate coast of southern Connecticut will receive the most snow accumulation.

Typically, communities at the immediate coast experience mixed precipitation, which keeps snow totals down, compared to interior and northern sections of Connecticut. But not this time.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for coastal sections of Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties, where up to four inches of snow is possible here. Away from the coast 1 to 2 inches is forecast and in far northern sections of the state, maybe an inch of snow is possible.

Timeline for snow

Snow is forecast to begin Saturday evening and snow covered roads are possible by 9 p.m., especially at the immediate coast, according to the National Weather Service.

The winter weather advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday until 1 p.m. Sunday.

"Total snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches," the weather service said for coastal sections of southern Connecticut.

In inland sections of southern Connecticut, snow is forecast to begin closer to midnight with 1 to 2 inches of accumulation possible, and in northern Connecticut snow begins after midnight and around one inch of accumulation is forecast here.

The snow should end by mid to late Sunday morning. Some snowfall rates of a half inch an hour are possible near the coast, the weather service said.

WFSB 3 TV meteorologists predictions and thoughts on this mini snow storm

"Tonight (after 6pm.), snow showers will develop as low pressure forms south of Connecticut," said WFSB 3 TV meteorologists. "We’re expecting the flakes to continue through the night and into Sunday morning. While snow tapers off before noon, 1-3″ of accumulation will be possible across Connecticut.

"Given this is the first widespread measurable snow, plus the potential impacts to travel Sunday morning, we have declared Sunday a *First Alert Weather Day*. The snow will be fluffy and easy to move.

"Some of the higher totals could be across southern CT and especially along the shoreline," said WFSB 3 TV meteorologists. "Locally a 4″ amount can’t be ruled out along the immediate shoreline. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued between 10pm tonight - 1pm Sunday along the immediate shoreline. The afternoon will be colder as temps only reach the upper 20s and lower 30s. Also, it will be breezy, with the wind ramping up late Sunday night." (Read more at WFSB 3 TV).
