Timeline For Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Released For Father's Day Weekend In CT

If you have outdoor plans this weekend in Connecticut, you will want to have a backup plan, as the forecast features plenty of rain.

CONNECTICUT — It appears that Father's Day weekend in Connecticut will feature a lot of rain and some thunderstorms.

Friday starts out dry and some areas are enjoying sunshine, but by the afternoon rain and thunderstorms are forecast. The National Weather Service said storms are possible anytime after 2 p.m. and some could be "severe."

"After a dry morning with hazy skies from elevated smoke, showers develop in the afternoon and continue at times through the evening. A few thunderstorms are also possible," the weather service wrote concerning southern Connecticut.

"Above normal high temperatures from the mid 70s to lower 80s expected across most of southern New England today. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible across the interior this afternoon and evening," the weather service wrote concerning northern Connecticut.

More rain and thunderstorms are forecast Friday night, and it looks to be rainy on Saturday. Between 1–2 inches of rain is possible, forecasters say. The rain is forecast to end Sunday morning and some sun should reappear in the afternoon, according to the weather service.

Monday-Thursday of next week looks sunny, with temperatures in the mid 70s.

"By (Friday) evening, scattered showers with isolated thunderstorms become likely as a disturbance heads our way...Otherwise, it’s warm and a bit muggier with highs near 80," wrote WFSB 3 TV Chief Meteorologist Mark Dixon with Scot Haney.

Father's Day weekend forecast details

"Over the Father’s Day weekend, you’ll want to keep the umbrella nearby and have plans for indoor activities as the weather is not looking ideal," wrote WFSB 3 TV meteorologists. "While we could use the rain, it’s poorly timed. An area of low pressure will meander just to our south tomorrow. This means we’ll see an abundance of cloud cover with ongoing chances for scattered showers.

"With an onshore flow temps only peak near 70. Isolated downpours and thunderstorms can’t be ruled out later in the day. Something we’ll be monitoring: Southern New England has been placed in the ‘marginal’ risk area for excessive rain (with the potential of 1-2″ with locally higher amounts). For Sunday, the low begins to move away. This will allow for at least some partial clearing, but lingering (isolated) showers will still be possible. So while not as wet as tomorrow, the weather will be a bit better (brighter, drier, milder... relatively speaking) for Dad with highs in the mid-70s."
