Severe Thunderstorms Forecast For Us: Here's When, What To Know

Severe weather is in the forecast for Connecticut as we could see strong thunderstorms, hail, heavy rain, and damaging wind gusts.

CONNECTICUT — After a period of largely tranquil weather, that may change on Thursday as severe weather is possible, according to forecasters.

There is a chance for strong-to-severe thunderstorms on Thursday, and temperatures will continue to increase as the week progresses. For the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, Saturday looks ok, Sunday looks great, and Monday is likely to feature rain showers. (See more details below).

"Today is another bright day, with temperatures going even higher as our warming trend peaks. Inland, temps could reach or even exceed 90 (the last time BDL had a 90° temp was on September 7th of last year when the high was 95)," said

"Regardless, it will be warmest day of the year so far. Meanwhile, shoreline locations top out in the 70s. In case you’re wondering, for the 22nd of May… the record high for the Hartford Area is 95 (1992) and for Bridgeport is 88 (2021). So if you’ve yet to install window units or haven’t turned on the A/C, you may need to now! Be careful in the heat and take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your pet(s)," Dixon and Haney said.

Severe Weather Chance On Thursday Details

"We’ve upgraded tomorrow to a First Alert Weather Day as thunderstorms could be strong to severe," Dixon and Haney said. "While there could be an early morning round of showers (from overnight storms to our west weakening as they move into CT), there’s a chance for a potent round of thunderstorms early to mid-afternoon as a cold front moves into the warm and muggy air mass."

"Those that develop will be capable of producing heavy rain, lightning, damaging wind gusts, and perhaps hail. Right now, the state is under a marginal (level 1) risk for severe storms, but if confidence increases, then the Storm Prediction Center could change the threat level..." Dixon and Haney said.

Memorial Day Weekend Forecast Details

"The holiday weekend forecast continues to evolve and while we do not expect a washout, it won’t be entirely dry. Saturday looks to feature increasing cloudiness… dry during the day with an isolated shower possible after sunset," Dixon and Haney said. "Sunday looks to feature a mix of sun and clouds. Memorial Day Monday, our longer-range models continue the chance for scattered showers." (Read/watch more at WFSB 3 TV).
