The Greenwich Police Department said it is aware that Verizon is currently experiencing a widespread service outage impacting Connecticut.
"Important information for residents:
- Verizon customers are still able to place emergency calls to 9-1-1.
- At this time, the 9-1-1 dispatch center is unable to make outgoing phone calls to Verizon users.
- Any Verizon caller reaching dispatch will appear as “911”, and dispatch will not be able to call the number back if the connection is lost.
"We urge callers to remain on the line until the call is completed whenever possible. Please do not attempt to test this. Only call 9-1-1 for emergencies. We appreciate the community’s patience and will continue to share updates as they become available," Greenwich police said.
On a Reddit thread, Connecticut numerous residents commented on the outage. One person said there was no reception in Bristol. Another person wrote earlier on Wednesday, "Fairfield and Bridgeport are out. People can’t even leave me a VM. WiFi calling doesn’t work either."
A Vernon resident noted an outage too and someone else wrote, "In Berlin stuck on SOS. My IT guy at work sent out a notice that its Verizon and Tmobile."
Verizon said its engineering teams were actively involved in addressing the problem.

Downdetector showed that Verizon customers began to report issues with their service around noon. Reports appeared to peak at more than 175,000 by 12:30 p.m. — but still remained elevated later into the afternoon, sitting at nearly 57,000 as of 3:30 p.m.
Impacted users said their phones were in “SOS” mode or had other no signal messages. In cities like New York, alerts were sent out warning that the outage may disrupt 911 calls — urging residents to try landlines and devices from other carriers, if available, or visit a local police or fire station in-person in case of an emergency.
A handful of outage reports for other carriers also bubbled up on Wednesday — but companies like T-Mobile and AT&T quickly confirmed online that their services were operating normally. Both suggested that their customers may be encountering issues contacting people with Verizon's service, however.
