Police Seeking Tips In Downtown Ansonia Robbery

The incident was videotaped, but witnesses didn't call 911, according to police.

ANSONIA, CT — Police are looking for the public’s assistance to help solve a weekend robbery on East Main Street that was caught on video.

The incident happened Saturday around 11:40 p.m., police said in a Facebook post Monday.

A man told police he was in a motor vehicle accident, and then the driver of the other car began yelling at him, then took his wallet and phone. The man was not injured during the robbery, police said.

Ansonia Police Chief Wayne Williams said the department has received numerous tips and is following up on them.

According to Williams, a video of the incident has been circulating on social media.

“We would encourage people to stop sharing this video, which revictimizes the victim in this case and sensationalizes the ridiculous actions of those involved,” Williams said.

Williams said there were multiple people standing outside at the time, yet no one called police or helped the victim.

“Instead of videotaping this robbery of a defenseless victim, responsible citizens should call 911,” Williams said. “We are better than this.”

Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call police at 203-735-1885. Anonymous tips can be left via the department’s Tip411 link.
