Report: Hartford Most Expensive City In U.S., New Haven Also Costly
U.S. News & World Report recently named the least affordable cities in the country and Connecticut is well represented on the dubious list.

HARTFORD/NEW HAVEN, CT — The fact Connecticut is well-represented on U.S. News & World Report's most expensive cities list is likely not surprising.
What just might be, however, is where Hartford and New Haven, the state's two iconic cities, stand on the recently released rankings.
According to the magazine's "Most Expensive Places to Live 2024-25" list, which was released this month, Hartford — not Denver, Colo.; San Francisco, Calif.; or New York City — is the most expensive city to live in the U.S.

Even more shocking, perhaps, is the fact New Haven is ranked fourth on the list, behind Hartford, Los Angeles, Calf.; and Miami, Fla.
As the magazine explains, the rankings are a byproduct of a bunch of number crunching that takes into account median income, median housing prices, and what is required to live comfortably in that area.

And, here's what U.S. News & World Report divulged:
• Hartford's median home price is $214,546 with the median monthly rent at $1,193.
The median income, however, is $46,377, a key factor leading to Hartford's top ranking on the list.
• New Haven, meanwhile, has a median home price of $273,625 with a median monthly rent of $1,430.
The median household income for the home of Yale University, though, is $59,436.
Other factors were taken into account, but when factors like costs and income are crunched together, those two municipalities in the Land of Steady Habits require some serious fiscal discipline just to live.
