CT Weather: Snow, Ice And Rain Falling Across The State: Here's What To Expect

It's going to be a mess out there Tuesday in Connecticut. Here is an updated timeline on when the snow begins and how much to expect.

On Tuesday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a special weather statement for interior sections of southern Connecticut.

"Freezing rain is occurring across far northern portions of Northern Fairfield, Northern New Haven, and Northern Middlesex counties in Southern Connecticut," the National Weather Service said. "Exercise caution is traveling across far northern sections. Untreated roadways, especially secondary and tertiary roadways may be slippery."

Around an inch of snow and ice may accumulate in interior sections of southern Connecticut and freezing rain may also mix in, the weather service said in an update. It will be all rain Tuesday night before the precipitation tapers off late Tuesday.

Original post: Snow is forecast to begin around 8 a.m. Tuesday for much of the state but should quickly transition to plain rain across Connecticut by late morning and most areas of the state won't see any meaningful accumulation.

In an update Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service said inland sections of Fairfield and New Haven counties could see 1 to 3 inches of snow and possibly 4 inches in the higher elevations.

"Snow develops early to mid (Tuesday) AM, changing to rain by early (Tuesday afternoon). A brief ending as wet snow possible early (Tuesday evening)," the weather service said.

At the coast, "Little or no snow accumulation before changing over to plain rain (Tuesday) AM. Any accumulation would be on grassy or elevated surfaces."

"Snow covered roads and hazardous travel is likely north of I-287 in NY and NJ, and I-684/I-84 in CT for the (Tuesday) AM commute and possibly (Tuesday evening) commute," the weather service said.

In Hartford and Tolland counties, the weather service has issued an advisory until 7 a.m. Wednesday for an accumulation of snow and ice totalling 1 to 3 inches. Read more: Winter Weather Advisory Issued For Hartford/Tolland County Until Wednesday Morning

In Windham County, snow will quickly transition from snow to rain Tuesday late morning, and less than a half inch of snow is expected.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for northern parts of Litchfield County. "Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 6 inches." For southern portions of Litchfield County, the weather service said about one inch of snow is expected.

WFSB 3 TV meteorologists predictions

"While the precip starts as snow around 8am, expect a quick flip to a wintry mix and then rain," said WFSB 3 TV meteorologists. "In fact, it will just be plain rain falling by the late morning across almost all of CT. The rain will be heavy at times through the afternoon and evening. Low visibility and ponding are expected on the roads for the evening commute. The storm pulls east, bringing the precip to an end this evening. There may be a brief flip back to snow on the back end, but we do not expect any real impact or accumulation from this."

"As for totals, NW CT will have the greatest chance of seeing measurable, perhaps plowable, amounts of snow," said WFSB 3 TV meteorologists. "Throughout Litchfield and NW Hartford counties, expect 2-5″ of snow. It will likely be fairly wet and heavy. Higher elevations will likely see the higher totals. Most of the snow will accumulate later this morning. A coating to 2″ will be possible on either side of I-84. Again, this will be pretty slushy, getting washed away entirely later on with the flip to rain. For the shoreline? It’s just cold rain, no snow accumulation is expected. (Read more at WFSB 3 TV).
