NEW BRITAIN, CT — The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) crowned a girls track and field state champion team at the State Open Saturday at Willow Brook Park, and rewarded gold medal performances in 35 individual events - including four in which new records were established - but its work is not quite finished yet.

For the third straight season, the Bloomfield girls team cruised to victory, compiling 88 points to 60 for runner-up Glastonbury. It is the 10th State Open crown overall for the Warhawks, who were paced by dual state title efforts by hurdler D'Asia Duncan (100 and 300).

Brooke Strauss of Glastonbury set a new State Open record in the 16500 meters, covering the distance in 4:40.62 to share nearly seven seconds off the previous standard. She also won the 800 meter run to join Duncan as dual individual winners, as well as Maya Quaranta of Sacred Heart Academy, who captured the discus throw and shot put competitions.

Things are a bit more complicated on the boys' side, due to official results not yet posted because one event remains incomplete. With four high jumpers still actively seeking to clear 6 feet, 8 inches, a violent thunderstorm swept through central Connecticut, forcing meet officials to temporarily suspend the day's final event.

Brodie Scott of Waterford, David Akinnubi of Greenwich, Ethan Rowe of Bloomfield and Camden Mazerolle of E.O. Smith will resume their battle in the high jump pit Monday at 2 p.m. Meanwhile, only Rowe's ultimate placement will have an effect on the final team placements, with Bloomfield having a shot at tying for second place should Rowe emerge victorious.

After narrowly placing second to Daniel Hand in 2024, East Lyme has clinched this year's boys team championship for the first time in school history with 40 points, though not yet officially declared. Ridgefield is currently alone in second place with 38 points, though Bloomfield could still tie for the runner-up spot. Bethel, currently third, will wind up fourth with 28.5 points.

Three new boys State Open records were set: Davian Johnson, East Hartford (300 hurdles, 37.28), Thomas Bannon, Rockville (javelin toss, 207-01) and Thomas Matlock, East Lyme (shot put, 62-09.75). Luke Richardson of Bethel was the sole dual singles champion among boys, prevailing in the 100 and 200 meters.
