Join us for a moderated conversation with author Andrew Burstein, via Zoom, to celebrate the release of Being Thomas Jefferson.

The deepest dive yet into the heart and soul, secret affairs, unexplored alliances, and bitter feuds of a generally worshipped, intermittently reviled American icon.
Perhaps no founding father is as mysterious as Thomas Jefferson. The author of the Declaration of Independence was both a gifted wordsmith and a bundle of nerves. His superior knowledge of the human heart is captured in the impassioned appeal he brought to the Declaration. But as a champion of the common man who lived a life of privilege on a mountaintop plantation of his own design, he has eluded biographers who have sought to make sense of his inner life. In Being Thomas Jefferson, acclaimed Jefferson scholar Andrew Burstein peels away layers of obfuscation, taking us past the veneer of the animated letter-writer to describe a confused lover and a misguided humanist, too timid to embrace antislavery.
Jefferson was a soft-spoken man who recoiled from direct conflict, yet a master puppeteer in politics. Whenever he left Monticello, where he could control his environment, he suffered debilitating headaches that plagued him for decades, until he finally retired from public life. So, what did it feel like to be Thomas Jefferson? Burstein explains the decision to take as his mistress Sally Hemings, the enslaved half-sister of his late wife, who bore him six children, none of whom he acknowledged. Presenting a society that encouraged separation between public and private, appearance and essence, Burstein paints a dramatic picture of early American culture and brings us closer to Jefferson’s life and thought than ever before.
About the author: ANDREW BURSTEIN recently retired from Louisiana State University where he was the Charles P. Manship Professor of History. He is the author of eleven previous books, including The Passions of Andrew Jackson; and Jefferson’s Secrets; along with Madison and Jefferson and The Problem of Democracy. A noted Jefferson scholar and biographer, he was prominently featured in the Ken Burns PBS documentary Thomas Jefferson. He lives in Charlottesville.

Being Thomas Jefferson: Virtual Author Event with Andrew Burstein

Dennis Gleeson is a former director of strategy in the Central Intelligence Agency’s (then) Directorate of Intelligence, where he was responsible for aligning information and technology to help analysts across the U.S. Intelligence Community work in the face of massive volumes of data. In late 2023, he wrote “Artificial Intelligence for Analysis: The Road Ahead” which appeared in Studies in Intelligence, Intelligence Community’s premier professional journal. 
Since its publication, he designed and moderated working groups on AI’s adoption and use by governmental organizations and has spoken about AI at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s “Innovation in Action,” at a regional conference looking at AI’s adoption across the Caribbean. In his talk, “An Introduction to AI,” Dennis will give an overview of how artificial intelligences like ChatGPT work, how you might use them, and some considerations and concerns related to their use (such as their impact on employment and education). He periodically writes about AI on Substack at “The Angry Analyst.”

Join us for a screening and discussion of Other&nbsp;Side,&nbsp;a documentary that premiered to sold out crowds at the 2025 South by Southwest Film Festival. It follows the journey of Connecticut’s own Lynda Bluestein, a lifelong activist who, facing a terminal cancer diagnosis, sought access to medical aid in dying (<a href="https://www.deathdifferently.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">view trailer</a>). A patient-directed end-of-life option that provides choice, dignity, and peace of mind.Medical aid in dying is currently authorized for terminally ill adults in 13 different U.S. jurisdictions.&nbsp; This compassionate end-of-lie option is supported by more than 75% of Connecticut voters.&nbsp; In the filmmakers’ words, “Death is inevitable. Suffering may be optional”.The film is 90 minutes in length and will be followed by a 30 minute Q&amp;A with a representative with Compassion &amp; Choices, an organization that makes your wishes its mission. Attendees will leave the event with resources like an advance planning guide to help them think through their priorities and wishes for end-of-life care, and more.&nbsp; It will also guide them in having valuable conversations with their healthcare providers and loved ones.Past screenings have created an opportunity for open and thoughtful conversations, and gratitude on the part of attendees for having been given access to this important subject matter.Please register, so we can set the community room up with appropriate seating.
