BERLIN, CT — The Berlin Police Department's cadet program took home first place in one of the competitions at a prestigious training competition earlier this month.

The event was the Northeast Regional Law Enforcement Education Association (NERLEEA) Tactical Challenge, held at the Berlin Fairgrounds.

The event on Oct. 11 brought together 19 law enforcement cadet teams from across the Northeast for a day of hands-on learning, teamwork, and leadership development.

While the scenarios included elements of tactical response, the primary focus was on helping young adults learn to make confident decisions under stress, communicate effectively, and work together toward a common goal.

Cadets also practiced basic medical care, problem-solving, and leadership in realistic situations that mirror challenges they may face in their future careers or daily lives.

In one scenario, cadets were tasked with executing a search warrant for narcotics.

They were expected to demonstrate an understanding of the Fourth Amendment, criminal procedure, and what actions were legally permitted within that situation.

This requires a level of knowledge and judgment that is advanced for such a young age range, and cadets consistently rise to the challenge.

And the Berlin PD's cadets took home first place in this category — "High Risk Arrest Warrant."

"Events like this are an important part of NERLEEA’s mission to help shape the next generation of community leaders, young men and women who are learning how to stay composed, lead others, and respond when help is needed," wrote NERLEA in a release.
