Student, 16, Shot Near New Britain High School: Reports

The boy was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and the school was locked down earlier today, police said.

NEW BRITAIN, CT — A New Britain High School student was taken to the hospital after he was shot near the school Tuesday morning, multiple news outlets reported.

The 16-year-old boy was shot at the corner of South Main Street and Mill Street shortly before 11:30 a.m., the Hartford Courant reported. A light blue or light gray Nissan Altima drove up to him, words were exchanged, and shots were fired, WTNH reported.

The boy was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to WFSB.

"He was conscious, he was walking, he was talking," New Britain Police Chief Christopher Chute said during a news conference, as reported by the Courant.

Following the incident, New Britain High School immediately went into lockdown, then switched to a "shelter-in-place" order at around 12:15 p.m. after officials identified no threat within the building, according to the Courant.

Police are asking anyone who can identify the car and the suspect involved to contact them, though WTNH said they didn't describe the suspect.

The car was last seen traveling westbound on Mill Street, according to the TV station.
