Donate This Summer in the Winter Holiday Spirit

Bethel Social Services has gotten tons of generous donations this holiday season. If you want to give, set a reminder for July.

The festive tree standing in the lobby of the Clifford J. Hurgin Municipal Center has more than just ornaments hanging from its branches — there are also envelopes suggesting donations for those in need this holiday season.

The outpouring of generosity so far this season has been immense, according to Bethel Social Services Director Kathleen Gillen, though that doesn’t mean the department couldn’t use more.

Gillen said the department is flush with toys and food (especially canned goods) but any donations that do not go out by the holidays will be disbursed throughout the year, including gift cards.

“I’m grateful for everything I get,” Gillen said, though if residents are feeling charitable, she suggested remembering Social Services and the food pantry during the summer, when giving isn’t necessarily on everyone’s mind.

“Give us a thought in the summer months when the pantry is running dry and the kids need back to school supplies,” she said.

If residents do want to make a donation for the holidays, Gillen recommended full-sized toiletries — such as toothpaste, soap and shaving supplies — which are taxable items that can be purchased using food stamps.
