Community Corner
At the YMCA, Kids Learn -- and Lend a Helping Hand
These Bethel kids learned how to contribute to their community through the local YMCA Children's Center, with help from a charitable business program.

Behind the YMCA Children's Center on Grassy Plain Street Wednesday, a group of kids pile into a box truck and begin unloading bag after bag of groceries.
The kids -- fourth, fifth and sixth-grade students at the YMCA -- worked from beginning to end to provide food to needy people in the community through a class project, with a little help from Stop & Shop and online grocers Peapod.
"We learned there were people in need in the community -- and kids as young as they are can still make a difference," said their teacher, Danielle Kiser. She and her teaching assistants Nichole Brothers and Nora Hawley taught kids how to budget for groceries, choose the healthiest foods and be conscious about where their money went.
Peapod and Stop & Shop contributed to the effort through the Kids Give Back program, donating $150 toward the effort.
"We got a lot," said Kiser, "But they also realized just how much $150 is."
The food donations will go toward the Bethel community organization Brotherhood in Action.
