Thelonious Sphere Monk was born on October 10,1917. Unique, quirky, genius pianist, godfather of bebop, Monk and his music were full of spirit. Monk wrote such seminal tunes as "'Round Midnight" and "Well, You Needn't" and is the second most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington.
Celebrate his birthday with "A-Mong-Us," a Fairfield County group comprised of veteran pianist Matt DeTroy, sax player Dave Sativisky, bassist Rich Zurkowski (Caravan of Thieves, Rick Reyes) and drummer Hans Broecking. The group has played together for the past five years, including a lengthy residency at Norwalk's Fat Cat Pizza. It's their love of Monk's and Charles Mingus's music (the name A-Mong-Us) that brought them together. Karen Johnstone has been a featured vocalist in the band for many years. She effortlessly glides on the syncopated, octave-ranging melodies of Monk.
Oct 16 - Nick Di Maria Quartet - The Music of Herbie Hancock
Nick Di Maria- trumpet, Rosemary Minkler- piano, Andrew Zwart- bass, Eric Hallenbeck -drums
Herbie Hancock is one of the titans of modern jazz, from classic and post-bop ("Maiden Voyage") to electronic and funk ("Watermelon Man," "Rockit"), to his Grammy-winning arrangements of Joni Mitchell's songs. One of Connecticut's hottest musicians, New Haven trumpet player Nick Di Maria, brings in his quartet of young guns to play selected tunes from Hancock's vast career. Nick began playing music at age 10 and over the years has played in genres from jazz to reggae to classical to punk. The New Haven-based artist has a degree in Jazz Performance from WestConn, studying under Eddie Henderson, Dave Scott, and Jeremy Pelt. He's performed at the New Haven Jazz Festival and was Director of the Outer Space Jazz Series in Hamden, and has four recordings to his name.

DONN TRENNER INTERVIEW ON CT STYLE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSjZXf2p3ec
With nearly 300 combined years in jazz, these three seniors are still swinging! Two longtime members of the Hartford Jazz Orchestra meet up with New York bass master and storyteller Bill Crow in an evening of "Jazz Legends." Expect great music, beautiful ballads, and more than a few anecdotes!
Former Music Director for the Steve Allen show, Donn Trenner is now the Hartford Jazz Orchestra leader and conductor. At 89, he stills plays a great piano. During his career, Donn has played for many big stars; one of his favorites was Nancy Wilson. He has a new book out on his musical experiences.
For the last 46 years, Sebastian Giacco has played lead alto saxophone for the HJO of which he is a founding member. At 90 years old, he is "still kicking butt on the horns," says Roger Post. Sebbie has played thousands of shows in CT, including the Oakdale and Mohegan Sun.
Turning 90 this December, Bill Crow has played bass with many of the world’s leading jazz artists, with Stan Getz, Art Farmer, Marian McPartland, and Gerry Mulligan among them. He's a leading chronicler of jazz anecdotes through his books, as well as hilarious onstage stories. He might even sing the blues if encouraged.
Newtown drummer Roger Post, who regularly plays with the HJO, organized this event and will join the trio on drums.
Oct 30- "Blue" Lou Marini & Tom "Bones" Malone Quintet
Two Blues Brothers originals!! with Josh Sette, keys; Steve Bulmer, bass; Roger Post, drums
Reprising their sold-out show this spring, Blue Lou and Bones Malone are putting the band back together -- again! Two original members of the Blues Brothers hit movie and band, saxophonist Lou Marini and trombonist Tom Malone, return for another rare concert together.
"Blue Lou" Marini is considered an unsung jazz hero, making his name originally in the Blues Brothers movie (he's the sax player behind Aretha Franklin dancing on the diner counter) and in high profile pop groups (Blues Brothers, Steely Dan, James Taylor, Blood Sweat and Tears, Saturday Night Live Band etc).
His good friend Tom "Bones" Malone followed much the same path, from the SNL band to the Blues Brothers, and both worked with BS&W and Frank Zappa. Malone was also a longtime member of David Letterman's Late Show band and worked with James Brown, Tony Bennett, Woody Herman, Stevie Wonder, and appeared in The Band film "The Last Waltz."
