Rain Slows, But Doesn't Stop, Summer's First Community Market

Organizers for the first Bethel Community Market of the season said it would go on, rain or shine.

The rain came, and the market did go on, inside the Clifford J. Hurgin Municipal Center. Vendors included returning businesses like Bethel's Daily Fare, Gemini Dream Jewelry and Contented Critter, as well as new business like Lulu Bella Children's Boutique and Sandy Hook-based Biscotti Etc. Bethel Police also joined with a booth.

It was the first day ever at the market for Redding-based guidance counselor Deb Owen, who makes mittens and other knitted artwork for her business Heart-Inspired Art.

"The people are lovely," she said, adding business had been a little slow due to the rain.

Byrd's Books owner Alice Hutchinson said she was glad she decided to come to the event despite the rain.

"We've had a successful day," she said. "They're done an amazing job bringing in vendors ... the work they've put in really shows."

The Bethel Community Market will continue every Thursday, rain or shine, until Sept. 26. For a full list of vendors, see Bethel's website.
