'Solarize Bethel' Program Aimed At Residential Solar Power: Report

The town has joined a statewide initiative encouraging homeowners to install solar panels.

BETHEL, CT — Bethel has joined an initiative aimed at educating and encouraging residents on the use of solar panels in their homes, reports the News Times. Solarize Bethel, a local initiative, aims to make it easier for residents to choose a more environmentally-friendly power source.

When the Solarize initiative was started in 2012, 900 homes statewide used solar power. There are now 23,000 homes that use solar power. The town's solar contractor, Ross Solar, gives residents a discounted rate.

Residents could spend $1,700 per year on electricity, but only need to pay $10 per month to access the grid if they use solar panels. Homeowners pay $15,000 on average for an array of solar panels, according to the report.
