UPDATE: More Than 3,300 Still Without Power In Bethel

Walnut Hill at Quaker Ridge, Hawleyville, Weed at Oak Ridge and Wine Sap Run at Pound Sweet Hill remain obstructed.

BETHEL, CT —As of 6:30 p.m. Sunday, the town still has 3,373 houses or businesses without power, according to the latest numbers from the utility company. That's a slight improvement over 24 hours ago.

"However, power was restored to Bethel High School and Berry School," First Selectman Matt Knickerbocker wrote in a news release on Sunday, "which means there will no power issues with conducting Tuesday’s Presidential Preference election."

The Bethel Police Department is continuing to operate using the backup generator.

In a report released Saturday, Eversource is pledging to have Bethel's lights back on by Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 6 p.m.

Roadways are gradually being made passable, Knickerbocker said, but some remain completely closed with wires and trees on the ground, including Walnut Hill at Quaker Ridge, Hawleyville, Weed at Oak Ridge and Wine Sap Run at Pound Sweet Hill.

The First Selectman also issued this warning to residents:

"We have received unconfirmed reports of downed wires in our area being re-energized by mistake. This can be caused by an improperly configured home generator. Even if it is not in your neighborhood, an energized line caused by a generator back feed can kill you. As a reminder, please do not touch any wires downed trees with wires in them. Do not attempt to clear any trees with wires in them. Do not drive around or through barricades where downed wires are present. All of us are very aware of how frustrating it is to still be dealing with closed roads at this stage of the recovery. We are working daily and hourly with Eversource as well as state officials to obtain the resources we need to get these areas cleared. We all understand how tempting it might be to simply grab a chain saw and take matters into your own hands. But please, do not put your own life in danger! "
