Branford Animal Shelter Explains Policy On Euthanizing of Animals

The director of the Dan Cosgrove center took to Facebook to explain the different policies shelters across the state have on euthanizing.

BRANFORD, CT - Many don’t realize that there are some, not many, animal shelters in the state that still have to euthanize dogs.

On the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter Facebook page, the following has been posted to try and educate all on the policies of the Cosgrove shelter - and the overall policies of other shelters throughout the state.

This post is coming from the Director of the Animal Shelter. I sat on the State Task Force for the Humane Treatment of Animals in Municipal and Regional Shelters and I was able to listen to concerns, questions and comments about animal shelters.

Some people in the audience spoke about how municipal shelters in our state do not euthanize for time or space. We at the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter have taken in two dogs in the last month from shelters that were going to have to euthanize for time or space. This post is not to condemn those shelters or to condemn those who spoke out at the meetings, but this post is to be more informational that it does happen in Connecticut.

We are imploring everyone of our followers , whether you live in our state or not, to contact a municipal or regional animal shelter in CT and ask them how you can help. Please think of the really small shelters too. Maybe you can network for them or take photos of their dogs..... but please don't judge the animal control officers who are there desperately trying to care for these dogs. They want nothing more than to find them homes. Animal shelters do not do dogs or cats any justice when they "warehouse" them.

If everyone who followed our page reached out to one shelter in our state to ask if they could help network their longest length of stay dog, we could make a huge impact for both the people and the animals. I appreciate your help and I know all of the animals do too. If you do get to call or stop in to an animal shelter...please take the time to thank those who are there. They really do care and we are lucky to live in a place where they go above and beyond for the animals at their facilities. Thank you!

PS These are just cute photos of some animals that were adopted from DCAS!
