Branford Approves 3-year Contract for New Deputy Police Chief

The current deputy police chief in the town of North Haven has been hired to be the number two cop in the town of Branford

BRANFORD, CT - The Board of Finance has approved a three-year contract for North Haven Deputy Chief Jonathan R. Mulhern to become the job of deputy police chief of the Branford police department.

The Branford deputy chief position is a new position put into the budget this year - with an eye toward the person selected to be a possible replacement for current Police Chief Kevin Halloran when he retires.

The position will pay Mulhern $115,000 per year when he starts - which should be, according to Halloran, in the next week or so.

Mulhern started his law enforcement career with the North Haven Police Department in 1992.

He served as a patrol officer for seven years until being promoted to Sergeant in 1999. In 2002, he was transferred to the Traffic Division. From 2004 to 2006, he served as a supervisor in the Detective Division.

Two years later, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and was assigned as the commander of the evening shift. In April of 2011, he was appointed to the position of Deputy Chief to serve under Chief Thomas J. McLoughlin.

Deputy Chief Mulhern also served nine years as the Commander of the regional SWAT Team. He currently is the Law Enforcement Vice Chairman for the DEMHS Regional Emergency Planning Team Steering Committee.

Deputy Chief Mulhern has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Central Connecticut State University and holds masters ‘degrees in Business Administration and Management from Albertus Magnus College. Deputy Chief Mulhern is a 2009 graduate of the 238th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA.

Deputy Chief Mulhern is a third generation police officer and both his brothers currently serve in area police departments. The Deputy Chief resides in North Haven with his wife Alycia and their two sons.
