BRANFORD, CT — Branford Selectman Joe Higgins has died, Branford's fire department announced on Facebook Friday.

According to the post, Higgins was a "true gentleman, friend and avid supporter of the fire service." In a release, Branford's select committee said Higgins has served on the board for more than six yeas.

Higgins worked for the New York Fire Department for more than 40 years, first as a FDNY dispatcher, then a Deputy Director of Dispatch Operations for all five boroughs in New York City.

The select committee said Higgins went on to be the keynote speaker at the town's annual 9/11 remembrance ceremonies.

"We will miss you around the firehouse table Joe, your smile was infectious and your company always welcome."

Higgins believed the best way to honor those lost was by teaching children about the sacrifices they made, and he focused his message toward children.

"The departments and communities he served over many years benefited from his experience and his wisdom, and we are honored to have had him serve as Selectman in our town for the past 6 ½ years," the select committee said in a statement.

He is survived by his wife, Angie; daughter, Michelle; son-in-law, Michael; and grandsons, Nicholas and Joseph.
