BRANFORD, CT — Democratic candidate for First Selectman Josh Brooks announced his plan to address "one of the most common concerns raised by Branford residents: dangerous speeding on local roads."

Brooks’ plan focuses on increasing the number of Branford police officers to "enhance traffic enforcement and maintain the safety of Branford’s streets."

"Together we can make Branford’s roads safer," Brooks said. "With more officers, increased enforcement, smarter road design, and drivers looking out for pedestrians, we can slow cars down."

  • More Branford Police Department Officers: Strengthen traffic enforcement by freeing up more officers for these efforts
  • Targeted Traffic Enforcement: Assign officers specifically to high-speed corridors for consistent, visible enforcement.
  • Expanded Use of Speed-Feedback Signs and Mobile Units: Deploy digital speed displays and portable units to remind drivers to slow down in key areas.
  • Traffic-Calming Infrastructure: Install raised crosswalks, curb extensions, and speed tables where speeding is most severe to protect pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Safer Intersections: Improve signage, signal timing, and lighting at dangerous intersections to reduce crashes.
  • Working with the State on Priorities and Investment: Partner with state transportation officials to identify and prioritize Branford’s most dangerous roads and secure state investment in safety-focused infrastructure upgrades.

"This plan adopts a balanced approach to reducing speeding and protecting everyone who uses our roads," Brooks said. "And by working hand-in-hand with the state and our neighborhoods, we’ll make sure every dollar is invested where it will make the biggest difference. However, we can't do this without the community’s input. If you have ideas for where we need enforcement or other methods of making our streets safer, I encourage you to reach out to me."

In his news release, Brooks pledged to "work with law enforcement, local stakeholders, state partners, and Branford’s neighborhoods to implement these changes responsibly and efficiently, ensuring Branford’s roads reflect the town’s values of safety and community."

Brooks is a Branford stonemason, small-business owner, U.S. Navy veteran, and long-time RTM member.
