Health Department, State Conduct Shoreling Study to Protect Long Island Sound

East Shore Health Department notifies East Haven and Branford residents that water quality testing will be done on Sound area properties.

The East Shore District Health Department (ESDHD) wants to take this opportunity to inform Branford and East Haven residents, living along the coastline of Long Island Sound (LIS), of the 2016 Shoreline Sanitary Survey that will be conducted by the Connecticut Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Aquaculture with the Local Health Department’s assistance. This study will include an assessment of properties on Long Island Sound as well as fresh water lakes and streams extending from the Sound. Water quality is an important aspect of our daily lives and we cannot take our treasured Long Island Sound for granted. With the help of our Shoreline Survey, we can better protect this important natural resource, as it is one of the most pristine estuaries in the United States. Through the cooperation and participation of our Branford and East Haven residents, the benefits of this vibrant coastal community can be enjoyed by all, and future generations to come.

Over the next several weeks you may notice our work being done around these properties, along the shoreline in hopes of identifying any potential contaminants to our waterways. Part of this survey will include: observing storm water drainage, identifying septic system locations, and investigating our residents’ concerns, to include water sampling as deemed necessary. Simply put, the survey can be described as a visual study of individual properties within these coastal community areas. With that being said, indoor access of these properties will not be necessary. The work of our Shoreline Sanitary Survey is set to begin on July 12th and continue for the rest of the summer. At any instance during the course of our Survey, if you, a resident, or anyone with a concern or comment, please do not hesitate to contact us at East Shore District Health Department at (203) 481-4233.
