Libby's "Excuse Room" For Sale in Branford After Owner Passes

The owner of Libby's passed away in December; now the bar property located on Route 139 is being offered for sale.

BRANFORD, CT - A few months after the co-owner of the iconic Libby's Excuse Room Café in Branford off of Route 139 passed away the property is on the market.

A sign saying the property is "available" now sits on the property site right near the bar sign.

The bar itself, which over the years has been listed among the “best dive bars in America,” has been closed for a number of weeks.

Liberato (Libby) Biaggio Riccio of Branford, 86, co-owner of Libby's Excuse Room Café and the former owner of the Sparkling Cave in East Haven died last December.

In his obituary, it said: "Libby leaves many special patrons who frequented Libby's for years and enjoyed conversations with him about just about anything that was on their mind including politics and sports.

"Libby was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his beloved Cowboys and the Red Sox, rarely missing an opening day game. He and (late wife) Vicci made annual month-long trips to Aruba for over 30 years. "
