Obituary: Donald Davis Hurley, 85, of Branford

A former North Haven, North Branford, and New Haven educator, he was North Haven's varsity tennis coach who himself loved playing tennis.

Donald Davis Hurley, age 85, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2024. He was born in New Haven, a son of the late Henry and Phyllis Davis Hurley. Don grew up in North Haven and graduated from North Haven High School in 1956. He attended Central Connecticut State Teachers College from 1956-1960 where he received his undergraduate degree in teaching. He then attended Southern Connecticut State Teachers College for his master’s degree in special education.

Don taught math to students at North Haven Middle School from 1960-1997 when he retired. He also taught math at North Branford Middle School and part time at St. Aedan’s Catholic School in New Haven after retiring from the North Haven School System.

Don was North Haven High School’s varsity tennis coach for several years both before and after retirement. He enjoyed the game and the interaction with his players. He also loved playing tennis and did so up until a few months before he passed away.

For the past twenty-two years Don and his wife resided at Harbour Village in Branford. He was on the Board of Directors of the Harbour Village Association. He was president of the Board for eight years and was vice-president up until 2022 when his health prevented him from taking an active role in community activities.

Don leaves his wife Rosina, of forty-four years, son Mark (Franchesca) Sudock, grandsons Anthony and Franco and his sister Pamela Bjarno. He was predeceased by his son Ryan Mark Hurley.

Friends may call Wednesday morning from 8:30 – 10:15 at the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main Street, Branford, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John Bosco Parish in St. Mary Church, 731 Main Street, Branford at 11:00.

Memorial donations may be made to the Closer to Free Fund for Smilow Cancer Hospital and the Yale Cancer Center, @rideclosertofree.org.
