BRIDGEPORT, CT — On Tuesday night, Independent candidate John Gomes was projected to be in the lead as Bridgeport's next mayor, in a possible upset over incumbent Democrat Joe Ganim.

But after midnight, after absentee ballots were counted, Ganim was projected to hold on and defeat Gomes in a squeaker, according to unofficial results from the Secretary of State's office.

Ganim garnered 5,723 votes to Gomes' 5,548, according to the unofficial tally.

If the result holds, Ganim and Gomes could be headed to faceoff again in a new primary, after a judge threw out the results of the primary in the summer.

Earlier in the evening, News 12 Connecticut and other media outlets reported that Gomes was projected to have 43 percent of the vote, compared to Ganim's 37 percent. Petitioning candidate Lamond Daniels was projected to have 13 percent of the vote, and Republican David Herz was projected to have 6 percent.
