Information from the City of Bridgeport:

BRIDGEPORT, CT — Last week, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) Community Connectivity Grant Program provided the City of Bridgeport with funding to install ADA-compliant ramps throughout the East Side neighborhood of Bridgeport. The program’s grant will help to fund the installation of 101 curb ramps and improve pedestrian visibility at 70 intersections to encourage resident safety throughout the East Side. This work is of particular concern in the East Side as 32% of neighborhood households do not have access to a vehicle. In the 8-year period between 2015 – 2023, there were a total of 178 vehicular crashes involving pedestrians or cyclists in the East Side.

“I would like to thank The Connecticut Department of Transportation for granting Bridgeport with the funding needed to install ramps and increase pedestrian safety throughout the East Side neighborhood,” stated Mayor Ganim. “Given the fact that a substantial portion of the East Side gets around the City without a vehicle, this grant will be a large asset to my commitment towards ensuring the safety of our residents while traveling throughout the neighborhood. My plan is to ultimately reduce the number of vehicular accidents where pedestrians fall victim and allow for ease of access for those who utilize East Side streets and sidewalks without a vehicle.”

The funded project will work in conjunction to Bridgeport’s Office of Planning and Economic Development (OPED) plans for developing a Complete & Safe Streets Design Manual, Action Plan, and Policy. The plan will stand to make a significant impact in improving the safety of East Side streets, advancing accessibility for those with disabilities, and providing essential connections to the broader active transportation network.
