📰 News we're reading

1. Bridgeport Council picks new president, ousts Nieves as leader (ctpost.com) — Bridgeport’s City Council has chosen North End councilor Jeanette Herron as its new president, ending weeks of gridlock and replacing longtime leader Aidee Nieves. Herron’s win reshapes who controls key council committees that handle budgets, redevelopment contracts, ordinances, and school funding, while also raising questions about potential conflicts with her job as a school district community liaison.

2. Woodbridge accountant sentenced to 32 months in prison for $2.3 million PPP fraud scheme (ctpost.com) — A Woodbridge accountant was sentenced in Bridgeport federal court to 32 months in prison and ordered to repay more than $2.3 million for defrauding the federal Paycheck Protection Program. Prosecutors say he inflated payrolls for several New Haven-area businesses and took over $1 million for himself and his family, including toward a Woodbridge home, and must report to prison in late January.

3. Jury weighs case in Bridgeport drive-by that killed woman, wounded man in the East End (ctpost.com) — A jury is now deliberating in the case of a Bridgeport man accused of a 2024 East End drive-by shooting that killed 28-year-old Brandaja Winston and wounded another person. Prosecutors argue DNA, witness testimony, and vehicle evidence tie him to the AK-47 attack, while the defense says police had tunnel vision and that key testimony is unreliable, urging jurors to find reasonable doubt.

4. Late director Rob Reiner shot 'And So It Goes' around Connecticut (nhregister.com) — Rob Reiner’s film “And So It Goes” brought a bit of Hollywood to Bridgeport, which served as one of several Connecticut filming locations back in 2013. Local viewers may spot familiar spots alongside scenes from Bristol, Greenwich, Southport and Black Rock as the movie follows a gruff real estate agent unexpectedly caring for his granddaughter.

5. Ridgefield infrastructure upgrades may cause traffic delays on Danbury Road, Aquarion says (registercitizen.com) — Aquarion Water Company, headquartered in Bridgeport, is warning Ridgefield drivers about traffic delays on Danbury Road starting Jan. 5 as crews replace underground water infrastructure. While the work is centered in Ridgefield, Bridgeport residents served by Aquarion may want to follow the company’s updates on scheduled and unscheduled work, especially regarding system reliability and fire flow capacity.
