Brookfield Firefighters Respond To Multi-Agency Early Morning Smoke Incident
Brookfield firefighters responded to a middle-of-the-night smoke call at Big Y plaza in Bethel.
BROOKFIELD, CT — Volunteer firefighters from Brookfield and surrounding towns responded early Tuesday to smoke inside a business at the Big Y plaza on Route 6.
The incident began around 2 a.m. when Bethel Dispatch received an automatic fire alarm from one of the businesses in the Stony Hill Road shopping center. Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Company, Bethel Fire & EMS, and Bethel police were notified.
A police officer arriving first at the scene found heavy smoke inside a locked store and reported the situation to dispatch. While no flames were visible, the smoke prompted Stony Hill’s fire chief to upgrade the call to a structure fire, bringing in mutual aid from the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Company.

Fire crews from Stony Hill, Bethel, and Brookfield established a water supply, forced entry, and searched the store for flames. Bethel firefighters also worked from the roof and rear of the building.
Investigators determined the smoke came from a malfunctioning machine room device that burned out components, sending smoke into several businesses. Firefighters used high-powered fans to clear the smoke, remaining on scene for nearly two hours.
