If there's a traditional path to becoming head of technical services at the town's public library, it's likely not serving as an aircraft mechanic in the U.S. Army. Chances are it's also not typical to be largely self-taught when it comes to the technical knowledge.
Meet Adam Delaura, who came to Canton Public Library a little more than a month ago and replaces Sarah McCusker, who recently left to work at the Windsor Public Library.
Delaura said he’s really enjoyed his time in Canton so far. In addition to such tasks as cataloging, ordering adult collections, teaching classes and helping people figure out their e-readers and other devices, Delaura spends several hours a week working on the library floor, especially the reference desk.
He said his favorite aspect is helping people of all ages and interests.
“(The library) is so many things to so many people,” he said.
Delaura said he also really appreciates the dedication of the Friends of Canton Public Library and board of trustees.
“It’s great when you have active and supportive members in both groups,” he said.
But the library wasn’t the first place Delaura found after graduating from Windsor High School in 1997. He joined the U.S. Army and served as an aircraft mechanic, including stints in Afghanistan in 2003 and 2004.
After the service, Delaura wasn’t quite sure where he would land.
“A wise friend of mine suggested I look into being a librarian,” he said.
He went on to receive an associate’s degree from Capital Community College and in 2008 received an interdisciplinary degree from the University of Connecticut in 2008.
He worked at the Bristol Public library before coming to Canton, running a large computer lab and teaching classes.
"I hope to bring some of that experience here,” he said.
Delaura is largely self-taught when it comes to the technical side of things. Still, he is known among Connecticut libraries to be among the most knowledgeable in the area, said library director Rob Simon.
Simon said he was happy for McCusker when she left but very upset on a personal and professional level since she knew “how to do everything.”
He said he was lucky enough to land Delaura, who has many of the same skills, has a great sense of humor, is well liked and humble.
“He’s quietly impressive,” Simon said. “I was extremely happy we were able to find someone like Adam.”
