Canton Fourth Graders Release Salmon into Farmington River

On Friday, fourth graders from Canton Intermediate School released approximately 160 Salmon into the Farmington River in Barkhamsted. 

The students had observed the fish from the time they received 200 salmon eggs in December. The kids performed tasks such as monitoring the temperature of the incubators watched as salmon progressed to the Alevin stage and in some cases on to fry. 

The program is coordinated with Salmon in Schools and was spearheaded by fourth-grade teacher Allison Godbout. 

Friday's activities also included leaf rubbings, illustrations, sensory challenges and other activities. Godbout said the students will continue to discuss salmon in their ecology unit.
