Canton High Seniors Awarded Scholarships

Ceremony held Tuesday morning.

The following scholarships were awarded at Canton High School Tuesday morning.

THE DR. DITERS SCHOLARSHIPS – Established in the name of Dr. Edward Diters and administered through the Canton Community Health Fund, these scholarships are awarded to students who intend to pursue an education  in a health-related field.  Students chosen to receive this award demonstrate high academic achievement and commitment to the community through volunteer work and extra-curricular activities.

THE EAC SCHOLARSHIP AWARD – is presented to a member of the graduating class who has been accepted to an institution of higher learning and plans to pursue a career in education.  This award is made on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, and service to the school.

The Daughters of the American Revolution,  founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington D.C., is a women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American History, and securing America’s future through better education.  Canton’s Phoebe Humphrey Chapter of the D.A.R. presents awards to deserving students.

DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION (D.A.R.)  HISTORY AWARDS – to the senior boy and girl for excellence in the study of United States History and Government.

THE CHEMISTRY CLUB AWARDS – awarded to students who epitomize commitment and dedication to Chemistry.  These students participated in all chemistry club activities and spent countless hours of time tutoring others.  For hard work and dedication in the field of Chemistry, and for all of the time contributed to the Chemistry Club, this award is presented to:

KENNETH  E. DRS MEMORIAL AWARD - Mr. Drs was a man who possessed great enthusiasm, energy, tenacity, and caring, and applied these qualities to all his endeavors.  This award is presented to a student who exemplifies these same qualities and who will be continuing his or her education.

CANTON LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS CITIZENSHIP AWARD – This candidate should be civically active and have demonstrated  concern for our community.  The recipient is also conscientious, has exhibited integrity and character, and exhibits a positive attitude.

CHIEF ROY BRUCKER SCHOLARSHIP – In Chief Brucker’s  memory, the Collinsville Volunteer Fire Dept., Inc. and Canton Memorial Ambulance present an award to a senior who is in the top half of the graduating class.  The candidate must demonstrate commitment to community leadership, be of high moral character, and intend to pursue his/her education.

OFFICER CHRISTOPHER BANNERMAN MEMORIAL AWARD – presented to seniors who have demonstrated integrity, compassion, determination, strength and courage, as well as a dedication to pursue dreams no matter how great the obstacles.  These recipients also exhibits a sense of humor and a desire to work and help others.

THE COLLINSVILLE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT INC. AWARD – presented to graduating seniors who have been active members in good standing, for a minimum of two years, as a cadet, MRT, EMT, and/or firefighter in the Town of Canton Emergency Services.  We appreciate the dedication and commitment exhibited by these recipients to our department and our community

THE CANTON YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP – Awarded to seniors who are currently involved with Canton Soccer and who came up through the ranks of the Canton Youth Soccer Assoc. program.  The student athletes should demonstrate leadership on and off the field.   The students should also demonstrate high academic achievement and commitment to their community.

THE CANTON LITTLE LEAGUE SCHOLARSHIP FUND – Given in memory of Sim Kaye, former teacher and coach in the Canton schools.  Two awards are presented to graduating seniors who have participated in Little League Baseball and Softball.  The recipients have continued to participate in a sport at the high school level, and plan to further their education after graduation from high school.  A plaque honoring the recipients is displayed in the school library.

THE CANTON ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB AWARDS – the Booster Club strives to recognize student-athletes who demonstrate teamwork, dedication in the classroom, and community involvement.  We believe that being the best athlete, class leader, or most active in the community may not always open doors of opportunities, but to endeavor to be the best of each person’s ability will certainly prove immeasurable.

THE CANTON LIONS CLUB AWARDS – To Canton High School students who have displayed and demonstrated active participation in service to our community.  The recipients have also maintained high ethical standards and a good academic standing.   (laptop computers)

THE DONALD OSTOP MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP –  This award is made in memory of Mr. Ostop, a much respected and beloved member of the fire department and the Canton Community.  It is given to a graduating senior who plans on attending an institution of higher learning in the pursuit of a career in accounting or a related business field.  This candidate  must be of high moral character and have demonstrated a strong high school record of public service.  This scholarship is presented by the Collinsville Volunteer Fire Department and matched by Mrs. Donald Ostop.

FOCUS ON CANTON SCHOLARSHIP – Focus on Canton, Inc. is a local non-profit group dedicated to coordinating community efforts to ensure that the personal needs of Canton residents are met.  This scholarship will be presented to a graduating senior who has exhibited a commitment to serving others in our community and who has a goal of continuing service to others with a career in a field that would involve helping others.

THE CHERRY BROOK GARDEN CLUB AWARD – is given to a graduating senior from Canton High School who plans to pursue a career in horticulture, forestry, conservation, ecology or a related endeavor.  The award is based on the candidate’s commitment to pursue further education or entrepreneurship in these areas.

THE KRZANOWSKI AWARD – presented in honor of Edward F. Krzanowski and Karen Lewis Krzanowski who were known and loved for their concern and service to others, high moral character, and maturity of purpose in their lives.  In granting this award, particular consideration is given to individuals who exemplify these same qualities in their own lives.  In addition to this award, a plaque honoring the recipient is permanently displayed in the school.

THE JULIUS FIALKIEWICZ SCHOLARSHIP – given in memory of a much beloved member of the Canton community.  For those who knew Julius, he is remembered in many ways – the golfer, the sense of humor, the family man, a man of God.  He never failed to lend a helping hand, and in spite of personal adversity, never lost his awareness of others and served as an inspiration to many.

CANTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SCHOLARSHIP – awarded to a senior who will continue his/her education, specifically in the field of business education and/or entrepreneurship. This recipient is selected by the Chamber of Commerce.

THE RAE B. SMITH MEMORIAL  SCHOLARSHIP – Offered in memory of a wonderful woman who was a dedicated member of the Cawasa Grange and our community, this award is made on the basis of active good citizenship in the school and community, scholastic promise, mature leadership, and the potential for humanitarian service.

MARK H. QUATTRO “KNOWLEDGE IS POWER” SCHOLASTIC AWARD – given to a senior who plans to pursue a teaching career.   Involvement in the community church, or extra-curricular activities, and  B average or better are considerations in the selection process.

THE CAWASA GRANGE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND, INC. – awarded for academic achievement and community service, this scholarship provides the recipient with 5000.00 per year for up to four years at an accredited college or university.

Hayley is also the recipient of The National Merit Scholarship in recognition of her academic promise and distinguished performance in the competition of 2013.


DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS – awarded to students planning to continue their education at vocational/technical schools and other specialized training programs, as well as to students who will enroll in traditional two and four year colleges and universities.  Awards are made on the basis of academic performance, school and community activities, leadership and character qualities, and high ethical standards.

Stepping Stones Educational Center, Inc. – Presented to a deserving Canton resident graduating from high school who is entering the field of education related to young children.

The Geraldine Smith Scholarship – Presented to a Canton High School student who is pursuing a career in one of the various fields of early education including Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Special Education.  The applicant must be pursuing a career working with children from Pre-K to grade 6.  This recipient must show enthusiasm, concern and zeal in providing the best education to our youth.

Rotary Club of Avon-Canton Scholarships – presented to two Canton High School graduating seniors who have displayed a pattern of service to their fellow students and community.  The recipients shall also have maintained ethical standards and good academic standing.

Rotary Club of Avon-Canton Technical/Vocational Scholarship – presented to a Canton High School student who will be pursuing a technical or vocational career.

The Arthur D. Rhea III Memorial Scholarship – presented to a Canton High School student who best exemplifies the characteristics that Mr. Rhea displayed each day of his life; a never-ending spirit of determination and perseverance, a positive and joyful outlook on the gift of each day,  an ability to laugh, and a desire to leave the world a better place.

Casey LeGeyt Memorial Scholarship - It is with honor that the Casey LeGeyt Memorial Scholarship be given to a Canton High School graduating senior.  We are proud to present this scholarship and give back to a member of the community just as the community so generously gave their support and love to Casey and her family.  This graduating senior exemplifies many of the qualities that Casey herself possessed....a genuine compassion for others, a love for her community and a desire to make a difference in the lives of others.

Wally Riiska Memorial Scholarship – Presented to a Canton graduate in memory of Wally Riiska, a long-time resident who enthusiastically supported the Canton community and Canton’s youth.

Maureen Edlund Memorial Scholarship – This scholarship is given in honor of Maureen Edlund, a long-time resident and an avid supporter of higher education.  The recipient of the award shall be a Canton resident with a strong academic record who is enrolling in a four-year college or university.  In addition, this student shall exemplify two of Mrs. Edlund’s  defining attributes:  steadfast character and integrity in all situations, and deep respect for family and community as reflected in the student’s strong history of service to others.
