Canton Issues Public Health Alert On Mosquitoes

The alert, issued Tuesday, comes as mosquitoes in nearby Farmington have tested positive for potentially deadly viruses.

CANTON, CT — With mosquitoes carrying potentially dangerous viruses found in Farmington in recent weeks, the Town of Canton Tuesday issued a mosquito alert of their own.

Canton officials issued a "public health alert" about the situation, urging folks to take precautions against mosquitos.

The Farmington Valley Health District is located in Canton and it serves other area towns, as well as Farmington. Canton is urging folks to abide by FVHD guidelines when it comes to mosquitoes.

Canton's plea comes as mosquitoes tested positive for both the West Nile virus and the potentially deadly eastern equine encephalitis.

According to local officials, they should minimize exposure to mosquitoes by:

• Minimize time outdoors at dusk and dawn.

• Use mosquito repellent when outdoors.

• wear shoes, socks, long pants, and long sleeves when outdoors for long periods.

• Make sure windows and screens are tight fitting and don't allow mosquitoes inside.

• Cover strollers and baby carriers with mosquito nets when outside.
