CANTON, CT — Local police are warning residents of a phone scam in which the caller falsely claims a warrant is out for their arrest unless they pay up.

The Canton Police Department has received reports of a phone scam involving an individual falsely claiming to be a department representative.

The scammer, appearing to use a Canton-based phone number, informs residents of an alleged warrant for their arrest due to missed jury duty and demands a monetary payment to resolve the matter.

"Please be advised that the Canton Police Department will never contact individuals to request payments, cryptocurrency, gift cards, vouchers, or any form of financial compensation for fines or warrants," wrote the CPD Thursday.

Those who receive a suspicious call of this nature are urged not to provide any personal or banking information.

People receiving such calls should immediately hang up and report the incident to the Canton Police Department at 860-693-0221.
