Cycle-a-Thon to Benefit Canton Woman Battling Cancer

Event one of several planned to help Nancy Richard and her family

Many have already stepped up to help a local family as mother and wife Nancy Richard battles cancer and several fundraisers are in the works, including a June 9 Cycle-a-Thon.

In early 2012 the 40-year-old Richard was treated for breast cancer and although she had been in remission since October was diagnosed with two cancerous brain tumors in March.

Richard has undergone two surgeries and has been hospitalized since the most recent diagnosis. Many close friends, family members and others have stepped up to help her husband John and their five children.

April Brodeur-Fitts, a long-time friend has coordinated a meal schedule and kept track of many daily needs for the family. Numerous friends and family have stepped up to help with tasks ranging from delivering meals to transporting kids to daily activities.

“The community has been great,” April Brodeur-Fitts said. “So many people have already stepped up and just want to help. The family is so thankful.”   Now, in order to help with medical bills and other challenges, several fundraisers are also in the works.

Other residents are planning fundraisers for the family.

One is a Spin for Nancy Cycle-a-Thon set for Sunday, June 9 at Frequency Fitness' cycling studio, 261 Albany Turnpike (Route 44) from 8 a.m. to noon.   The business has donated its space for the event and riders or teams can sponsor a bike for $100 per hour.
