The town of Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department responded to St. Patrick rectory in Canton Thursday afternoon and quickly contained a fire above the second floor ceiling.
A Church employee reported smoke on the second floor at approximately 4 p.m., fire chief Richard Hutchings said.
Another church employee said a light fixture was actively on fire.
Fire marshal Adam Libros responded, saw active fire in a light fixture opening and used a fire extinguisher to keep it at bay, officials said.
Responding firefighters finished extinguishing the fire and it was contained to the area between the second floor ceiling and attic floor, Hutchings said.
Fire officials also removed insulation and checked to ensure the fire had not spread.
"The fire was contained to the area of origin," Hutchings said. "Thank goodness someone was here, saw smoke and called somebody."
Libros is investigating the cause of the fire.
