Health Department Has Test Kits For Potentially Deadly Gas

The Farmington Valley Health District serves Canton, Farmington, Simsbury, Avon, Granby, and East Granby, among others.

CANTON, CT — A Canton-based regional health agency serving several towns has test kits for potentially deadly radioactive gas available while supplies last.

The Farmington Valley Health District, located at 95 River Road, Suite C, Canton, said Monday it has radon test kits available to residents from member towns at several locations.

The FVHD serves the towns of Avon, Barkhamsted, Canton, Colebrook, East Granby, Farmington, Granby, Hartland, New Hartford, and Simsbury.

Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas caused by the underground decomposition of naturally occurring uranium.

If not vented properly in a home and/or basement, it can accumulate and cause long-term health issues for people living or working in that environment, including lung cancer.

Free test kits will be available at the following sites in the district:

• FVHD office at 95 River Road, Canton.

• Avon Free Public Library, 281 Country Club Road, Avon.

• Beekley Community Library, 10 Central Ave., New Hartford.
