Heat Advisory, Air Quality Alert Issued For Sunday

It's going to feel like 100 degrees for most of Connecticut on Sunday and the National Weather Service urges residents to take precautions.

This will arguably be the hottest day of the summer as the National Weather Service has issued a “Heat Advisory” for most of Connecticut as heat index values could climb all the way to 100 degrees on Sunday.

The “Heat Advisory” is in effect from noon to 6 p.m. and is for the entire state except for parts of New London County and southern New Haven county.

Temps in southern New Haven County will still be hot as the high temps there will be in the low 90s and an “Air Quality” alert has also been issued for all of Fairfield, New Haven and southern Middlesex counties.

According to the heat advisory, heat index values will climb to 100 degrees and “prolonged exposure to high heat and humidity will result in heat exhaustion or heat stroke,” the weather service states.

“A heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 100 to 104 degrees for two consecutive hours,” the National Weather Service writes.

The worst of the heat is expected to be between 1 and 5 p.m.

If you do have to work outside today, the weather service urges people to take frequent breaks and seek out airconditioned places.

The National Weather Service’s “Air Quality” alert, which has been issued for Fairfield, New Haven, and southern Middlesex counties states the air “may approach or exceed unhealthy standards especially for sensitive groups such as the elderly and very young … and those with pre-existing conditions such as asthma. It is recommended those individuals limit strenuous outdoor activities.”

And once the heat starts to subside late Sunday, we’ll have to deal with the possibility of showers and thunderstorms, which could begin late Sunday and the chance of stormy weather continues into Monday and Tuesday.
