Stop A Suicide With 'QPR' Training From Farmington Valley Health District

The FVHD serves Avon, Canton, Farmington, Simsbury, Granby, Barkhamsted, Colebrook, East Granby, Hartland, and New Hartford.

CANTON, CT — The regional health department overseeing multiple Farmington Valley towns is offering a special training session on Tuesday, June 26, that might save a life.

The Farmington Valley Health District, which is located in Canton, is hosting a free QPR training session to help people thwart suicides.

It will take place on Thursday, June 26, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the FVHD at 95 River Road, Canton.

The FVHD is the health department for the towns of Avon, Canton, Farmington, Simsbury, Granby, Barkhamsted, Colebrook, East Granby, Hartland, and New Hartford.

Just like CPR is a medical procedure to combat death from a stopped heart, QPR — an acronym for question, persuade, and refer — refers to measures anyone can take should they confront someone threatening to harm themselves.

The FVHD said those are "three simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide."

In addition, Tuesday's program will include free Narcan training, where folks will learn how to administer the life-saving drug that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
