Obituary: David Stuart MacDonald, 83, formerly of Cheshire
David proudly served in the United States Coast Guard, enjoyed a successful career in engineering and was heavily active in the community.
CHESHIRE, CT - (From Wallingford Funeral Home) David Stuart MacDonald, 83, of West Newfield, ME and Melbourne, FL, passed away on January 12, 2022 at Masonicare.
Dave was born in New Haven on May 18, 1938 the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Plumb) MacDonald.
Dave was a long-time resident of Connecticut, growing up in Wallingford and spending many years in Cheshire. After receiving a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Hartford, Dave taught electronics in the United States Coast Guard. Following his service, he pursued a career in Electronics Engineering, culminating in a position as Chief Engineer at Earmark, Inc., in Hamden CT until his retirement in 1992.
Dave was a lifetime member of the Brevard County (Florida) Orchid Society, recognized for his work to rescue and relocate rare and endangered species, as well as culturing them from seed. Alongside his wife, he served as a ranger at the Rich Grissom Memorial Wetlands (Viera Wetlands) in Florida.
He was also a lifetime member of the Newfield (Maine) Historical Society. He was widely known for sharing his knowledge of science and nature, as well as the ability to help others fix just about anything. His many interests included hunting, fishing, shooting, boating, flying airplanes, pyrotechnics, gardening, orchids, travel, bird photography, and nature in general.
His family would like to thank Masonicare and Masonic Home Health & Hospice for the care and compassion they gave to David and his family.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle (Cook) MacDonald, his daughters, Susan (Bemis) Smith and Cynthia (Bemis) Szczepanski; grandsons Marty and Justin Smith; his nephew, Scott MacDonald; and his niece, Breanna MacDonald. He was predeceased by his wife, Priscilla (Alden), his son, Mark Bemis, and his brother, Samuel “Lee” MacDonald.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Ext., Wallingford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Newfield Public Library, 637 Water Street, Newfield, ME 04056
