Obituary: John “Gunky” D. McCarthy, 78, of Cheshire
John, an avid Boston sports fan, cherished playing softball, golf and spending time with family.

CHESHIRE, CT - (From Alderson-Ford Funeral Home) John D. McCarthy, “Gunky”, 78, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday March 4, 2021 from vascular dementia and heart disease.
He was the husband of Nancy (Grey) McCarthy.John was born April 30, 1942, in West Concord Ma, the son of the late William L and Margaret (Lehane) McCarthy.
John loved his Boston sports; the Red Sox, the Bruins and the Patriots. One of his greatest loves in life was playing softball for the Baptist church in Cheshire, CT.

John was very proud of his wicked curve ball. When he wasn’t on the softball field, he loved to golf, spend time with family, and read Robert Parker’s Spenser novels.
John was a friend of “Bill W.”

Besides his wife of 57 years, John is survived by his sons John (Janet) of Manchester MO, Matthew (Kelly) of New Hartford CT, and daughter Ellen McCarthy and her fiance Brian of Cheshire; NINE grandchildren: Jessica, Travis (Dani), Michael, Douglas, Devon, Mallory, Lauren, Matthew (Gabbie), Molly and 2 great grandchildren Braxton and Bryson.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers Billy, Joe, and Richard and Sisters Helen and Peggy.
Arrangements – A memorial service will come at a later time and at the convenience of his family. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 South Main St, 06410, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
