Public Hearing To Consider Names For New Elementary School In Cheshire
The Town Council is holding a public hearing tonight (Jan. 16) to consider naming proposals for a new elementary school in Cheshire.

CHESHIRE, CT — The Town Council is holding a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16 in Town Council Chambers, 84 South Main St., Cheshire, to consider naming proposals for the new North End elementary school.
The criteria for naming as adopted by the Town Council in the “Policy Naming of Town-Owned Property” is the following:

A. General Considerations
The naming of Town-owned property shall be subject to each of the following general considerations:

1. It should be appropriate and in the best interests of the Town to name the Town-owned property that is the subject of the request.
2. The name should convey a sense of place, continuity and belonging, and celebrate the Town’s distinguishing characteristics.
3. The name should be suitable for long-term recognition by Town residents.
4. The name should be understandable to Town residents.
B. Additional Considerations Specific to Names Containing Geographic, Natural and/or Historical Elements
The naming of Town-owned property with a name containing geographic, natural and/or historical elements shall be subject to the following additional considerations, as applicable:
1. The name should be based on the area or neighborhood in which the Town-owned property is located.
2. The name should be based on a natural or geographic feature.
3. The name should be an historical name related to the Town’s heritage and/or historical folklore.
C. Additional Considerations Specific to Names of Individuals and/or Families
The naming of Town-owned property after an individual and/or family shall be subject to the following additional considerations:
1. The name should be of an individual or family distinguished through outstanding achievement of international, national or local significance; and
2. The name shall not be of any public official, whether elected or appointed, while that individual is holding any public office.
D. Additional Considerations Specific to Names of Businesses
The naming of Town-owned property after a business shall be subject to all of the following additional considerations:
1. The nature of the business;
2. The business’ record of community involvement, giving or service (whether financial or in-kind);
3. The business’ relationship to the Town;
4. The business’ reputation in the Town; and
5. The requirement of a signed agreement between the Town and the business that shall include a sunset provision and specific guidelines setting forth the manner in which the business will use the Town’s name and the manner in which the business name or advertising brand will be placed on or near the Town-owned property.
