CLINTON, CT β€” A unique new bookstore that's focused on strengthening the community is now open in Clinton. Henry on Main is in the original location of the Henry Carter Hull Library at 10 W. Main St.

Clinton Senior Program Coordinator Christina Acampora said, "Although it's not inaccurate to call it a store, it's really so much more than that. Rather than focused on revenue, this is a new venture aimed at strengthening our community and encouraging more foot traffic to our vital downtown area. It's a very unique concept as it's a true partnership between the town, Henry Carter Hull Library, and Clinton Senior Connection."

She said that Senior Connection has "a very active membership base, but no physical center yet." Often, programs like book clubs, music meet-ups, and health workshops are planned at the main location of the Henry Carter Hull Library.

"Since the auxiliary location will be staffed with one library employee at a time, it seemed like a great opportunity to bring the town's seniors in as shift volunteers," Acampora said. "Many of them are retired educators, business owners, etc. Not only do we want to send the message that they are still integral members of our community, it also gives them the opportunity to connect more with each other and also whoever walks through the door to enjoy the space."

Two volunteers are staffed at a time, each for two-hour shifts. They will greet patrons, help with book sales, and assist in organizing the inventory. There are over 50 Clinton Senior Connection members "on staff."

The store is selling used books in excellent condition. Acampora said "the shelves look no different than if you walked into a high-end bookshop. They are organized by genre and priced very affordably."

The back half of the building is a separately-owned coffee shop called Cafe Nola.

"Folks are welcome to come down the shared hallway to enjoy a book, read the daily newspaper, or even do a puzzle at Henry on Main while they enjoy a cup of coffee -- without having to actually purchase a reading item at all," she said. "That's why it still still feels like a library at its core. There is also free Wi-Fi provided, Chromebooks on loan, and wireless printing available, so it doubles as a lovely remote office location for students or professionals looking to get a little work down in a cozy, downtown setting."
